The Keyboarding/Document Layout and Design course builds on the Keyboarding/Document Formatting course.Student proficiency can lead to software certification. The student will use a hands-on approach to develop proficiency in document creation and design. Emphasis is on production of business applications including design and layout, speed and accuracy. Concepts, capabilities, procedures and legal responsibilities of word and information processing are applied. Simulated real projects from rough draft copy and/or transcription magnetic media are used for problem solving and business document preparation.

Course Description

Sample Performance Task             Design and produce a brochure on legal and ethical issues to include: issues and penalties for plagiarism, copied data with permission and the process used in obtaining permission. Obtain formal permission for use of a quotations, art form, design, and photographs.

The student:

            Keys a minimum of 45 NWAM on a 5-minute timed writing.

            Applies proofreaders’ marks to indicate all errors in content, format, spelling, and grammar on a document printout.

            Keys and formats mailable copies (no errors) from various types of copies to include but not limited to letters and memos.

            Keys, formats, and prints problems applying vertical and horizontal centering with main, secondary, and columnar headings’ using the correct formatting tools.

            Keys, formats, and prints at least one mailable, average-length unarranged letter in mailable form in one 20-minute period.

            Perform drills on sentences and paragraphs from straight copy, script, and rough-draft to develop speed.

            Have students illustrate at least three font technologies, using different backgrounds. Compare and contrast the typography of each.
